Dean’s Message

“Today and always, there will be an obligation to pass on to the new generation the tradition of liberal scholarship - scientific or in the humanities - and to bring the understanding of things and human actions to everyone.” ~Frank Macfarlane Burnet

When I reflect upon the above quote, I realise the immense assimilatory power of Humanities and Social Sciences which opens our eyes, and broadens the horizon of the inner self, inspiring us to accept without inhibitions and give without reservations. Our primary goal is to cultivate these activities. Here, through our perseverance and tolerance, we prepare individuals, well-versed in the art of humanity.

The School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) started with the objective of developing exceptional academic programs through the creation of powerful learning environment. It has been designed to create an atmosphere for the students to transform into strong individuals, ready to leave their print on the world. The school works unanimously towards achieving this goal by continuously challenging the students intellect, instilling faith and the capacity to learn, giving them a hands-on experience and cultivating their spiritual development.

Involving our students in basic processes of understanding crucial concepts of history, literature, polity, psychology, sociology, and yoga; discussing the theories, practicing critical thinking, and expressing thoughts, we stimulate the students creative energies and their potential to perform. Our teachers encourage an independent thinking. Such an environment not only sharpens the creation of the individual intelligence, but also facilitates an overarching sensitivity towards the world and a capacity to comprehend the social functioning of the world they inhabit.

We have trained more than 500 non-native speakers in English language, from Afghanistan, Nigeria, Vietnam, Bhutan, Congo, China, Thailand and many other countries. We have been able to send them back to their respective countries as proficient speakers of the language. This is the strength of our vision and the reason for which our students are better equipped to read, analyze and comprehend reports, briefs, articles, text, etc. These exercises on a larger level have also helped in increasing awareness of history, literature, political science, psychology, sociology, and many other aspects of human knowledge.

In a nutshell, Humanities and Social Sciences help in expanding our capacity to sympathize with other human beings by enhancing our ability to see and imagine human complexity. It broadens our intellectual horizon by enlarging our power to experience life vicariously. Literature creates potential to stimulate imagination and offers different perspectives. History provides knowledge of the creation of society from the beginning of time. Political Science extends the understanding of a complex web of polity which envelops human development. Psychology lets us dwell deep into the psyche of human beings often answering complex questions of the functioning of ones mind. Sociology achieves the goal of identifying social issues and bringing them to the forefront. Yogic Sciences focus on the boundlessness of the human body and soul instilling within the students a notion of exemplary discipline.

SHSS through its seven departments and a plethora of courses, sets to provide such diverse experiences to its students. In this experience, there is a cultivation of deeper form of thinking, understanding, imagination and empathetic identification with other humans and societies.

SOLC provides the best base in individual development as well as grooming for becoming an asset to the society.
It has been a year attending series of grooming session by our respective mentors, I find myself in a new light of knowledge and wisdom. Now, when I pause for a while at this moment and look back upon the very first day I stepped in this department as a larva, I find myself as a pupa. And two years from now, as I peep through the lens of knowledge and wisdom, I see myself as a colourful butterfly

Being a student of the School of Languages and Cultures, I got a chance to live a new way of life. This department gave me several opportunities to enhance my communication skills and to progress academically. Here I gained a lot of confidence, to which I was oblivious at the beginning. Extracurricular activities which are frequently organized tremendously raised my level of confidence. The faculty members are always supportive and encouraging and I am very grateful to them
