About Department

Life sciences are study of composition, structure and function of living forms and their interaction with environment. The scope of life sciences is wide and is one of the most promising areas of research. Life sciences enhance our understanding of nature of life, and provide new insights to diverse areas in biology such as disease pathogenesis, diagnosis, prevention and cure. The acquired knowledge in Life sciences also helps us to combat various environmental issues, finding out ways of sustainable management, and biodiversity conservation, to name a few. Department of Life sciences offers undergraduate and or postgraduate courses in various disciplines such as Biotechnology, Microbiology, Food Science and Technology, Botany and Zoology.

Awards & Achievements

Department of life sciences has made significant contributions to the field, with its faculty members published more than 400 articles in national and internationally recognized peer-reviewed journals indexed in SCI and Scopus. These publications have appeared in esteemed journals such as Bioresource Technology, Journal of Cleaner Production, Materials Science and Engineering C, Nanomedicine, Critical Reviews in Microbiology, Biocatalysis and Agricultural Biotechnology, Indian Journal of Microbiology, Bioresource Technology Reports, European Journal of Pharmacology, Biomedical Materials and Devices, and many others. Additionally, most of the faculty members have also authored over 89 book chapters, further showcasing their expertise and knowledge in their respective fields. 3 of our faculty members, Dr. Piyush Kumar Gupta, Dr. Sanjay Kumar, Dr. Soumya Pandit, have been listed in the list of world’s top 2 % scientists.

Over the last five years, the Department of Life Science has awarded ~23 Doctoral Degrees reflecting its strong commitment to research excellence and innovation.

  • Prof. Saleem Siddiqui, Dr. Sujata Pandit Sharma and Nikita Singh (Ph.D Student) were granted a patent titled “Biodegradable polymeric film from orange pomace and method for preparation thereof”
  • Dr. Santosh Kumar Mishra and Dr. Ashwini Kumar have been selected as an Editorial board member for the prestigious journal Scientific Reports (Nature Publishing Group)
  • Dr. Piyush Kumar Gupta has been selected as the fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering
  • Dr. Santosh Kumar Mishra joined as a reviewer in Folia Microbiology (Springer), Plant Biotechnology (Wiley), Archives of Microbiology (Springer)
  • Dr. Soumi Sadhu joined as a reviewer for Applied Biochemistry and Biotechnology (Springer), Journal of Clinical Ultrasound (Wiley)
  • Dr. Nupur joined as an editorial board member of International Journal of Microbiology and Biotechnology
  • Dr. Ashwini Kumar joined as the Chief Executive Editor of a new journal Exon. He also serves as an Associate Editor for Frontiers in Endocrinology, and as reviewers for Frontiers in Pharmacology (Frontiers), and Redox Biology (Taylor and Francis)
  • Prof. Sibaram Khara, honourable vice chancellor of Sharda University congratulated Dr. Piyush Kumar Gupta for publishing a review article in Molecular Cancer, BMC (IF = 41.444) a top peer-reviewed international journal of cancer research. He also applauded Dr. Soumya Pandit for publishing a textbook in CRC publisher.
  • Prof. Sibaram Khara, honourable vice chancellor of Sharda University congratulated Dr. Piyush Kumar Gupta for getting a Start-up Research Grant of a total cost of 24 lakhs from the Science and Engineering Research Board, Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India
  • Dr. Kanu Priya, Associate Professor, Department of Life Science has won the best Women Scientist Research award by Springer Nature in Oct, 2025. This was the initiative by the Ministry of Education and Springer Nature as a part of Her Research, Our Future to recognise the outstanding contribution to research and innovation. She has also bestowed with the prestigious SERB (Science & Engineering Research Board) International travel grant to present her research work in International conference, South Korea.
  • Dr. Smita Jain, Assistant Professor, Department of Life Science has won the best Women Scientist Research award at ANRF sponsored International Conference on ‘Recent Innovations in Cellular and Molecular Biology: Emerging Insights and Applications’ organized by Department of Botany, Jai Vyas Narain University, Jodhpur, December 2025. She has presented her work on Role of atropine in restoration of neurotransmitter imbalance after xenobiotic insult.
  • Dr Smita Jain has recently co-authored a textbook of “Medicinal Chemistry-III” published by Shaswat Publications (ISBN: 978-93-6087-151-2) in 2025.This book focuses on the intricate science of designing and developing therapeutic agents which can potentially interact with the biological macromolecules and can be examined for its role in disease prevention and treatment.
  • Mr. Abhinav Nair, Assistant Professor, Department of Life Science received the Best Oral Award for oral presentation entitled “In Silico Analysis of Secretory Biomarkers For Early Glioblastoma Detection” in the Two Days International Conference on Pharma and Allied Sciences in the Age of AI: Innovations and IPR Strategies (PASAI-2026) presented on April 27th 2026.
  • Dr Soumya Pandit, Associate Professor, Department of Life science, SSBT is honored to be listed among top 2% scientists worldwide for consecutive 3 years (2023,2024,2025) (Stanford University report published by Elsevier on 4th October 2023). He is also designated as ‘Adjunct Professor’ at Universitas Brawijaya, Malang, East Java, Indonesia and ‘Honorary Professor’ at the Department of Metallurgy, University of Johannesburg, South Africa. He has delivered invited lectures at various prestigious institutes such as NITs and IIT Kharagpur nationally as well as on international platforms as well. He has been an invited reviewer many reputed Scopus indexed peer reviewed journals of high impact factor.
  • Dr. Subhabrata Kar, Associate Professor, Department of Life Science was awarded the prestigious American Chemical Society (ACS) Best Oral Presentation Award at the 2025 International Conference on Current Advances in Drug Design & Translational Science (CADDTS), organized by the Department of Chemistry, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi held during February 26th – 28th, 2025. This award recognizes his DBT-funded research focusing on rational drug discovery and development of nanoparticles as cancer therapeutics.

Facilities and Resources

Department possess well equipped laboratories specialized for varied research and routine lab experiments. The faculty members are dynamic and pursue interdisciplinary research in areas of plant biotechnology, crop improvement, protein biochemistry, drug discovery, virology, fermentation, plant tissue culture, animal cell culture and industrial biotechnology, food preservation and development of novel food products etc.

Student Achievement

  • Team clean and green fuel led by Mr. Soumyajit Chandra, Ph.D. Scholar from the Department of Life Sciences, secured the third Prize in the theme “Agricultural science and Allied subjects” at AIU Zonal Level Competition, held at G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, Uttarakhand on 25-26 Nov 2025.
  • Team Bioplastic led by Ms. Rakhi Rajput, Ph.D. Scholar from the Department of Life Sciences, secured the First Prize in the theme “Social Sciences, Humanities, Business Management, Commerce and Law” at AIU Zonal Level Competition, held at G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, Uttarakhand on 25-26 Nov 2025. She has also won First prize at International Level AIU Anveshan Event, held at Shoolini University, Solan, Himachal Pradesh, on 25–26 February 2026.
  • Dr. Shilpa Kumari, completed her PhD under the supervision of Dr. Kanu Priya. During her PhD tenure she received several prestigious recognitions for her academic excellence and research contributions. She was honoured with the Social Warrior Award at the Environmental Sustainability and Business Conclave organized by Raghuraj Peepalman Foundation at India Habitat Centre in July 2025. In December 2024, she received the Young Scientist Award at the 8th Annual Meeting of the International Association of Zoologists and the 5th International Conference on Recent Trends in Life Sciences and Biotechnology, hosted by Maharishi Markandeshwar (Deemed to be University).
  • Many of our students have qualified UGC-CSIR NET and GATE exam and are pursuing higher studies.
