About the Programme
Entire world is facing periodic outbreaks/epidemics/pandemics of viruses. Pandemic caused by COVID-19 is a recent example. In the last 15 years, more than 12 new viruses have appeared challenging the clinical and public health care of number of countries including India. We are in urgent need of developing scholars and trained man power who can possess the expertise of understanding, diagnosing and managing viral infections. Hence people/scientists/trained manpower who know how to deal with these viruses and who have basic knowledge and skills about these viruses is the need of the hour. Study of viruses along with knowledge about the cell and its components as well as diagnostic tools and detection technique are very important things which needs to be taught to the students of post graduate level. Besides this, proposed programme represents multidisciplinary courses in the form of bioinformatics, biostatistics, vaccinology, pharmacology, epidemiology etc which may enable generating a specialised group of experts in the field of Virology. The M.Sc. Virology will be a very attractive qualification to get employment in diagnostics, vaccine development and public heath sectors of the country and the world.
Programme Educational Objectives (PEO):
- PEO1: To create a foundation of virology and its concepts in the minds of students through theoretical and practical concepts.
- PEO2: To acquaint students with the recent advances of viral diagnosis in biological samples and its implications in causing epidemics/pandemics.
- PEO3: To inculcate the disease causing mechanism of viral diseases of plants, animals and humans and generate research contentions associated with these.
- PEO4: To train the student for industry- or academia-ready by developing independent thinking, good communication and scientific skills and to acquaint them with translational aspects so that they can be performer in an industrial or academic environment.
- PEO5: To make students understand interdisciplinary nature of research in virology combined with immunology, biochemistry, pathology and epidemiology etc. by assigning them different research projects/ case studies/ presentations.
Program Outcomes (PO’s):
- PO1 - Knowledge:
The student will have fundamental knowledge of the various types of viruses and the mechanism of their replication and transmission. - PO2 - Skill Set Development:
The student will become skilled via observations and leads emerging during the theoretical as well as experimental study and utilize them for their future career and growth opportunities in performing various viral-diagnostics methods and deliver the technical performance during their placements. - PO3 - Oral Communication and Scientific Writing:
The students will be able to deliver good oral communications, will also be trained for about writing technical (project report, assignments and reviews and documents). - PO4 - Environment and Sustainable Development:
The student will be able to recognize the essential roles of virology in the lives of society today and tomorrow and gain valuable insight for management of infectious diseases and its related risk factors. - PO5: Ethics, Independent Thinking and Team Work:
The student will be able to focus on "real world" relationships and dependencies among the phenomena and processes will give character to any location or place.
*Note: For 4-year B.Sc. graduates, a 1-year M.Sc. Virology  program is available with options for Class Work (CW), Research Work (RW), or a combination of both (CW-RW). A detailed syllabus will be provided upon request.
