Basic Workshop
The first year students are taught about carpentry, machine shop, soldering, welding, sheet metal work, fitting work and smithy shop etc. in this shop.
Laboratories
The Mechanical Engineering department provides the latest knowledge to the students. All the laboratories cater to the needs of the students giving hands-on experience and the wide coverage of the subjects. The department has well-established laboratories.
Engineering Mechanics Laboratory
This Laboratory has apparatus to conduct the experiments based on worm and worm wheel, Belt Pulley, Trusses, Beams, Momentum Conservation, Friction, Moment of Inertia, Gear Train, Slider Crank Mechanism, Ultimate Tensile/ Compressive Strength, Toughness, Hardness etc.
Material Science & Testing Laboratory
This Laboratory has the facilities for testing engineering materials. It includes two universal testing machines, Torsion testing machine, Impact test, Brinell hardness tester, Rockwell hardness tester, Vickers hardness tester, NDT methods. Microstructural examination on cutting, grinding, polishing, etching, and heat treatment experiments etc. can also be performed in this Laboratory.
Engineering Drawing/Machine Drawing Laboratory
This lab provides the facilities to create the drawings of various parts as well as different components, assembly of machines, structures, systems etc.
Fluid Mechanics Laboratory
This lab provides the facilities to conduct the experiments based on orifice meters, venturi meters, notches, meta-centric heights, Reynolds number, friction factor, boundary layer thickness, Darcy law, surface tension, coefficient of viscosity, Bernoullis theorem, pipe fitting coefficients etc.
Measurement and Metrology Laboratory
Experiments based on the pressure measurement, temperature measurement, strain gauge measurement, flow measurement, vibration measurement, limits, fits, tolerances, an effective diameter of a screw thread by 3 wire methods etc. are conducted in this laboratory. The measuring devices like Vernier callipers, micrometres, tachometers, sine bars, slip gauges, limit gauges, level protector, feeler gauge, dial indicators are used to conduct different experiments in the laboratory.
Dynamics of Machines Laboratory
This laboratory has an apparatus like cam & follower mechanism, governors, gyroscopes, gears, gear trains, brakes, clutches, linkages & mechanisms etc. to conduct several experiments.
Heat & Mass Transfer Laboratory
It facilitates to conduct the experiments on Stefan's law, emissivity, pool boiling, critical insulation thickness, heat pipes and various modes of heat transfer on a composite wall, composite cylinders, heat pipes, solar collector, heat exchangers (parallel and counter flow) etc.
Machine Design Laboratory
Design and drawing of cotter/ knuckle /welded/riveted/ bolted joints, keys, couplings, screw jack by conventional design process and using C-programming are performed in this laboratory.
Manufacturing Science Laboratory
Various manufacturing processes like casting, mould, pattern making, injection moulding with plastics, sand testing, hand forging process, tube bending, press work experiments i.e. blanking/ piercing, washer etc, wire drawing/extrusion, jigs/fixture experiments, power hammer etc are conducted over there. On the other hand shear angle/tube cutting/threading on various manufacturing processes like casting, mould, pattern making, injection molding with plastics, sand testing, hand forging process, tube bending, press work experiments i.e. blanking/ piercing, washer etc, wire drawing/extrusion, jigs/fixture experiments, power hammer etc are conducted over there. On the other hand, shear angle/tube cutting/threading on a lathe, grinding, gear cutting (milling machine), surface grinding, machining on the shaper, arc/resistance welding, soldering, brazing, drilling of holes using twist drills, unconventional machining are also performed in next semester.
Fluid Machinery Laboratory
Experiments are conducted on Pelton wheel, Francis/ Kaplan turbines, reciprocating pumps, centrifugal pumps, hydraulic jack/press, hydraulic ram, hydraulic brake in this laboratory.
Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Laboratory
This Laboratory emphasizes the study of various refrigeration and air-conditioning components e.g. compressor, evaporators, condensers, expansion devices etc. Performance evaluation complete system is done on several test rigs.
Automobile Engineering Laboratory
Different systems of an automobile like suspension systems, braking systems, injection systems, steering systems, lubrication and cooling systems, transmission systems, ignition systems, fuel supply systems and various parts of automobiles are explained in details by different sectioned and working models.
CAD/CAM Laboratory
There is an exclusive computational laboratory with CAD, CAM and CAE facilities. The laboratory has CNC Milling to meet the basic requirements. The department has 60 AUTOCAD licenses. The Laboratory will also be equipped with virtual modelling and virtual simulation software. The laboratory is planned to provide hands-on experience on Pro/Engineer, Catia.
CNC Laboratory
This lab provides the facilities to conduct the various machining operation on the cylindrical and rectangular workpieces. It comprises of machines like FLEXTURN which is a numerically controlled machine and MTAB XL MILL is a 3 axes CNC bench-milling machine with Fanuc Emulated control programming software.The software incorporates major functions and facilities used in an industrial controller with a further option of linking to CAD/CAM & FMS.
The simulation laboratory is equipped with Matlab and Simulink software. Matlab is an important tool for mathematical modelling, real-time analysis and numerical solution. Simulink is used for simulation of mechanical systems such as hydraulic systems, thermodynamic cycles, braking systems, power plants and dynamic systems. The laboratory will also be equipped with Finite Element analysis, heat transfer analysis, kinematics and dynamics simulation and CFD software in future.
Work System Design Laboratory
This is a state of the art laboratory to study human factors and ergonomics. The laboratory is equipped with various ergonomics measurement systems such as anthropometric kit, handgrip dynamometer, vibrometer, pinch gauge, stethoscope, heart rate monitors, EMG electrodes, light, sound and temperature meters, vibration sensors and weight scales. The students do the critical measurements related to existing and proposed way of working. They establish a way of working for high human comfort and high outputs.
Automotive Aerodynamics Laboratory
The laboratory has a large wind tunnel equipped with modern measurement facilities such as anemometers, pressure gauges, non-intrusive probes and high-speed camera for flow visualization. Any object can be placed in the wind tunnel for aerodynamic studies such as drag, lift, wake formation and turbulence.
Automotive Air Conditioning Laboratory
Several working models of the automotive air-conditioning system are installed in this laboratory. The students can visualize the working of the system and can take measurements. Transient measurements are carried out to find out the cooling time of the passenger cabin.
Internal Combustion Engine Laboratory
This laboratory is equipped with the modern experimental facilities for IC engines. The cut sections of working models of four-cylinder petrol engine, six-cylinder diesel engine, carburettor, ignition systems, and several other engine subsystems are displayed for visual studies. There are experimental setups on the petrol engine, four-cylinder diesel engine and single cylinder diesel engine with modern measuring equipment. The bomb calorimeter and the flash point apparatus are used to measure calorific value and sulphur content in fuels and flash point of fuel and mixture respectively. The laboratory is also having an experimental system for fuel supply system in a diesel engine and petrol engine.
Applied Thermodynamics Laboratory
This laboratory is equipped with modern testing instrumentation, which is regularly updated and extended. Exhaust sampling and analysis is conducted by means of gas analyzers for regulated pollutants such as CO, CO2, NOx and HC. The exhaust sampling and analysis is further enhanced with the use of the ultra-fast NO, NO2, and HC analyzers, and a mass spectrometer for non-regulated pollutants. Particulate emissions from engines are measured with particle instruments, such as classifiers, generators, counters and dilutors. The laboratory has also a clean room with high precision balances for filter weighing and a complete system for engine analysis. The laboratory has a synthetic gas bench with a high-temperature tube furnace reactor, in order to conduct targeted experiments with various exhaust after-treatment devices. The laboratory is also equipped with octane and cetane number testing units.
Fluid Mechanics Laboratory
The fluid mechanics' laboratory has experimental setup for study of fundamentals of fluid mechanics. There is an experimental setup for jet impingement, viscosity measurement, notches and weirs, orifice meter, venturi meter, laminar and turbulent flow regimes and centre of pressure.
The strength of Material Laboratory
This laboratory has hardiness testing, impact testing, tension testing, torsion testing and shear testing. There are fatigue testing and buckling testing facilities. The laboratory has 600 kN electronic universal testing machine with modern data acquisition. There are cantilever beam experiments, simply supported beam experiments and combined load experiments.
Kinematics of Machine Laboratory
Objectives of this laboratory are to impart practical knowledge on design and analysis of mechanisms for the specified type of motion in a machine. Various experiments with governors, gyroscopes, balancing machines and universal vibration facilities are available to understand machine dynamics. The types of equipment are governor apparatus, gyroscope apparatus, static and dynamic balancing machine, balancing of reciprocating masses, journal bearing apparatus, universal vibration apparatus, whirling of shaft apparatus, standard rotor kit with crankshaft simulator, a rotational accelerometer with connecting cable and machinery fault simulator.
