Research

Main Research findings:

  • Rose cv. Else Paulson, Ice Berg and June bride showed highly resistant reaction to grey mould whereas Christian Dior and Peter Frank field were highly susceptible cultivars to the disease under Jachh conditions.
  • Tuberose performed best when planted during the February month under Jachh conditions in relation to blooming duration and yield.
  • Gladiolus can be cultivated successfully throughout the year under Jachh conditions except the planting of corms done during December-January months and poor flower quality was produced during hot months (i.e. may and June).
  • Marigold can be cultivated successfully as commercial crop in the Nurpur area. Transplanting during September (first fortnight) showed maximum flower yield as compared to September (last fortnight) October, November and December transplanting at 35x35 cm spacing.
  • Propagation studies on Roses showed maximum success when T-budding was done during October month on Rosa indica and Rosa multiflora rootstocks.
  • Studies conducted on the growth habits flowering times, height attained and ornamental importance of trees, shrubs, climbers and ground covers during 1990-95 at Jachh and found many species of trees, shrubs , climbers and ground covers can thrive well under the Jachh conditions.
  • A trial was conducted on vase life of Gladiolus by giving five types different shapes to dipping end of spikes and assessed for water uptake, increase in spike length.  The spikes were kept in water at room temperature in vases.   The higher water uptake and spike length was obtained in pencil sharpen shape of dipping cut ends as the shape has largest absorbing area.
  • The studies were conducted on the effect of growth regulators on growth, flower size, flower yield and seed production in Marigold at RHRS, Jachh and found that application of GA3 showed better growth, flower size, flower yield and seed yield as compared to IAA and control.
  • In Kangra valley the trees mango, tun, shisham and peepal were found as host for orchids.  These orchids collected from the valley and successfully propagated and multiplied at station.
  • An experiment was conducted on T-budding of 5 varieties of Rose budded on two root stocks (Rosa indica x R. multiflora) during three different times of the year (i.e. June, October and February).  The best results were found when budding was done during October month and Rosa multiflora a local rootstock having climbing nature was superior to R. indica in relation to maximum survival of plants in the area.
  • Propagation studies were conducted on Rubber plant (Ficus elastica) by air layering method during July, August, October and February.  The layering done during July-August showed best results as compared to the October and February layered.
  • Established DR Thakur Rose Garden at UHF Campus consist   850 varieties of various types of roses viz. Hybrid Tea, Floribunda, Shrub Roses, Polyanthas, Miniature Roses and Climbing Roses

Ph.D work:

Studies on the effect of Biofertilizers application in tuberose (Polianthes                      tuberosa L.) cv. Double  The investigation was carried out to study the effect of Biofertilizers, nitrogen and      phosphorus alone and in combination with each other on different growth parameters and concentration of macro and micro nutrients in the leaves of tuberose.

Conclusion:  Higher doses of N& P can be save with application of Biofertilizers in combination with nitrogen and phosphorus at low doses.  Hence, nitrogen, phosphorus and Biofertilizers should be applied in proper combination to get the desired results.
