1st Anand Swaroop Gupta Memorial National Virtual Moot Court Competition, 2020

School of Law, Sharda University as a part of online teaching learning had organized its 1st Anand Swaroop Gupta Memorial National Virtual Moot Court Competition, 2020 from 27th to 29th of May, 2020.

  Virtual mooting helped continue the process of teaching and learning and imparting the requisite skills for prospective learners hailing from the field of law. The three-day event witnessed participation from a number of teams coming together and competing to exhibit their exceptional skills at raising arguments and rebuttals.

This one of its kind virtual moot court competition was commenced by the participation of various teams across the nation. The inaugural session was attended by Chief Guest Hon'ble Mr. Justice Pradeep Kumar Srivastava (Judge, Allahabad High Court).

The preliminary, semi-final and final rounds were judged via video conferencing by Honble Mr. Justice Pradeep Kumar Srivastava (Judge, Allahabad High Court), Honble Mr. Justice Talwant Singh (Judge,High Court of Delhi), Honble Mr. Justice Sanjay Kumar (Judge, Patna HighCourt), Honble Mr. Justice Rajesh Tandon (Chairman of Uttarakhand Law Commission), Honble Mr. Justice Rakesh Tiwari (Former Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court), Learned Dr TR Naval (Chairman, Permanent Lok Adalat, Delhi), Dr. Manoj Kumar (Founder Partner at Hammurabi & Solomon Law Associates, Delhi), Ms. Shweta Bharti(Senior Partner at Hammurabi & Solomon Law Associates, Delhi) and other learned judicial officers.

 The event concluded with the Valedictory session on Friday 29 May 2020. It was graced by the presence of Honble Mr. Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul (Judge, Supreme Court of India) as Chief Guest. His Lordship appreciated the online teaching learning initiative at Sharda University during the period of lockdown in the country. He also emphasized on developing the mooting skills which helps the students to learn in a realistic way. He suggested that we should make continuous efforts to keep pace with ever evolving law. He pointed out the risk of fallingof information into wrong hands as an abuse of social media in the context of maintaining the balance of freedom of speech and expression.

Further he focused on the mooting skills which enables the advocates to read the mind of the judges and develop new thinking process.The discussion should evolve around the contemporary legal issues which is the need of the hour while keeping in mind the doctrine of basic structure of the Indian Constitution. Lastly he congratulated the winning teams and the organizers whostrived hard to bring out a massive event to life, via video conferencing.

 Honble Shri PK Gupta, Chancellor, Sharda University expressed his happiness on organizing the virtual moot court and averred that online teaching learning is the new normal. He also emphasized on importance of face to face interaction as online interaction lack personal rapport and liveliness. He wished the participants good luck for their future.

 Honble Shri YK Gupta, Pro-Chancellor, Sharda University wished participants well and expressed his optimism about improved situation in few months and said that Online classes have ensured quality teaching learning. He congratulated the Moot Court Society, Faculty and students on organizing the virtual moot court.

Mr PK Malhotra, Former Secretary, Ministry of Law & Justice and presently a distinguished Professor, School of Law said that School of Law apart from conducting Online classes has organized series of webinars and this Virtual Moot Court Competition shall provide a platform for the budding law students to showcase their mooting skills.

Prof Sibaram Khara, Vice Chancellor, Sharda University expressed his happiness on various online academic initiatives undertaken by the School of Law and emphasized that Sharda University has conducted more than 700 online events and has been awarded E Lead Award 2020 by the QS ranking for academic digitization and online teaching learning.

The victorious team from Saveetha Law School, Chennai (Team Code- Kelson) and  Runners up team from Govt. Law college, Mumbai (Team Code-Llewlyn) secured handsome cash prizes, free subscription of SCC Online data base and accolades. The Hammurabi & Solomon Law Associates and SCC Online were the valued sponsors of this prestigious event.
