About the Programme

The Bachelor of Optometry is a five-year undergraduate programme comprising four years of academic instruction followed by one year of compulsory clinical internship, designed to develop skilled and autonomous primary eye care professionals. The academic component integrates foundational biomedical sciences, including ocular anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, visual optics, and vision science, with progressive clinical training in refraction, binocular vision, contact lenses, paediatric optometry, low vision rehabilitation, and ocular disease management. Emphasis is placed on evidence-based practice, diagnostic accuracy, and early detection of vision-threatening disorders such as cataract, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration, as well as identification of systemic diseases with ocular manifestations. The one-year rotatory internship provides intensive hands-on training in hospital and community settings, enabling students to refine clinical competencies, patient management skills, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Graduates are equipped to practice independently or contribute effectively within multidisciplinary eye care and public health systems.

Program Outcomes (PO’s)

  • PO1: Apply the knowledge of general and ocular medical sciences, visual sciences, clinical sciences, as well as an understanding of health care delivery system.
  • PO2: Find, analyze, evaluate and apply the information systematically and shall make a appropriate diagnosis to provide quality eye and vision care.
  • PO3: Demonstrate effective planning abilities including the prevention, detection, diagnosis, and management of visual conditions.
  • PO4: Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of the optometry practice.
  • PO5: Conduct and present research and clinical studies which will contribute to the advancement of optometry and health sciences.

Programme outcome (PSOs)

  • PSO1: To facilitate, motivate and promote knowledge and technical skills in core areas of   Optometry including advanced tools and techniques like common eye disease, contact Lens, Binocular vision, Low vision to young aspirants.
  • PSO2: Diagnose and treat common problems affecting the eye
  • PSO3: To develop student with a strong professional ethics and moral duties that will positively affect their profession, community and society and have enough Optometry knowledge to Move forward in entrepreneurship endeavours.

This course is for individuals who...

demonstrate a strong interest in vision science, ocular diagnostics, and modern imaging technologies used in eye care. It is designed for students who are curious about scientific principles underlying visual optics, ocular physiology, and disease mechanisms, and who seek to apply this knowledge in clinical settings. The programme particularly suits those who value experiential and practice-oriented learning, possess analytical thinking abilities, and show commitment to precision and patient-centered care. It is ideal for learners motivated to explore emerging advancements in optometric instrumentation, diagnostic modalities, and evidence-based clinical practices, and who aspire to contribute meaningfully to primary eye care, research, and technological innovation in the field of optometry.

Students who are looking for...

a career dedicated to improving community ocular health and overall visual welfare will find this programme highly suitable. It is designed for individuals committed to preventive eye care, early detection of visual disorders, and reduction of avoidable blindness at the community level. The course prepares graduates to actively participate in public health initiatives, vision screening programmes, and outreach services aimed at enhancing access to quality eye care. It is an appropriate career pathway for those who are socially responsible, empathetic, and motivated to contribute meaningfully to society through professional expertise in primary eye care and vision rehabilitation.
