Debasis Mallik holds a PhD in Economics and brings 30 years of experience across teaching, research, accreditation, academic leadership, and international collaborations. He considers himself a change agent and has been a committed contributor to leading management institutions in India. He served for 18 years at SP Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR), Mumbai, followed by more than two years at Prestige Institute of Management and Research (PIMR), Indore, and was most recently associated with the Institute of Management, Nirma University, Ahmedabad. He has published extensively in international peer-reviewed journals. His key areas of interest include Project Management, Water Management, and Family Business Dynamics. He also has extensive hands-on experience in global accreditations and rankings, teaching-learning pedagogy, curriculum management, and alumni engagement.
After a brief stint at St. Xavier's, Sahibganj, he joined ICFAI, Hyderabad, where he taught Economics and Statistics. At ICFAI, he served as faculty at ICFAI Business School (IBS), Hyderabad, and was also a member of the Central Editorial Board, with responsibility for all journals and magazines published by ICFAI. He was a regular columnist for ANALYST, the flagship magazine of ICFAI. He also contributed to the writing of two ICFAI books: Microeconomics and Quantitative Methods for ICFAIs CFA Program.
After more than seven years at ICFAI, Debasis joined the Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad, in 2002 as a Consultant at the Centre for Analytical Finance. At ISB, his responsibilities included research and teaching foundation courses such as Quantitative Methods and Microeconomics.
He moved to SPJIMR in 2004, where he taught courses such as Microeconomics, Multivariate Techniques, and Research Methodology. In 2010, he launched the Global Management Programme (GMP) at SPJIMR in collaboration with ESB Business School, Reutlingen University, Germany. Within a year, the programme expanded to include new partner institutions across Europe, the UK, and the US. Today, it has more than 10 partner schools, which also support its broader global initiatives, including international placements. In addition, Debasis played an active role in AACSB accreditation and NIRF rankings. He also served as visiting faculty at business schools in the Netherlands, Germany, France, the US, the UK, Singapore, and Dubai.
From April 2022 to June 2024, he was associated with PIMR, Indore, as Senior Director, overseeing the entire operations of postgraduate, undergraduate, and law programmes. He was instrumental in establishing two Centres of Excellence: Exponentia, a training and consulting arm for family businesses, and CorpX (Prestige Centre for Organizational Research, Practice & Excellence). He also successfully launched a new programme, the Post Graduate Diploma in Business Administration (PGDBA), designed as the equivalent of a one-year MBA, with an option for students to complete an MS degree at partner schools in the US, the UK, or Europe. In addition, he led a successful revamp of the teaching-learning pedagogy to better align it with the needs of students at PIMR, Indore.
His most recent assignment was with the Institute of Management, Nirma University, from July 2024 to July 2025. During this period, he initiated three major collaborations: with the Eli Broad College of Business, Michigan State University; the Graduate School of Management, UC Davis; and the University of Illinois Chicago. The Institute also launched a Global Immersion Program in collaboration with the Eli Broad College of Business.
