Dr. Mayane Haushahn Bueno is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at Sharda University, India. A Brazilian social anthropologist and pedagogue, she has developed an international academic career spanning Brazil and India, combining ethnographic research, teaching, and academic leadership. Her work is situated at the intersection of Anthropology, Sociology, Education, Religion, and Gender Studies, with particular expertise in Moral Anthropology, Care, Migration, and South Asian Studies.
Dr. Bueno's research is grounded in long-term ethnographic fieldwork among Adivasi communities and migrant domestic workers in India. Her scholarship explores themes such as care, ethics, religion, inequality, migration, gender, and cultural change, contributing to comparative debates from a Global South perspective. Alongside her research, she has been actively involved in curriculum development, postgraduate supervision, research mentoring, and the internationalization of higher education. At Sharda University, she established the ResearchLab, an initiative that supports Master's and PhD researchers through regular workshops on research design, methodology, academic writing, and publication. She also serves as the Coordinator of the International Students Cell and has organized doctoral seminars and faculty development programmes.
Dr. Bueno holds a PhD and an MPhil in Social Anthropology from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Brazil. She also studied Sociology at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), India, and earned a Bachelor's degree in Education from the Federal University of Fronteira Sul (UFFS), Brazil. Her doctoral dissertation, Hierarchies of Care: The Experience of Domestic Workers in New Delhi, India, examined the intersections of migration, care, gender, and social inequality through ethnographic research.
Her teaching portfolio spans undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Anthropology, Sociology, Research Methods, Media Studies, Ethics, and Gender Studies. She has supervised Master's dissertations and doctoral research on topics including religion, development, public policy, migration, and social inequality, while previously teaching at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, language institutes, and public schools in Brazil.
Dr. Bueno has published in national and international journals, contributed book chapters, and presented her research at conferences across India, Brazil, and the United Kingdom. Her recent work addresses domestic labour, moral identity, indigenous health, religion, digital care, migration, and political ecology. She also serves as a reviewer for academic journals and has chaired sessions at international conferences.
Her academic achievements include doctoral and master's fellowships awarded by CAPES (Brazil), the Silver Medal at the Safarnama Visual Art Exhibition (New Delhi) for her photographic exhibition Adivasis, and First Prize in the "Childhoods" photographic exhibition at the National Museum of Brazil. Beyond academia, she hosted the public outreach podcast Nós Precisamos Conversar, bringing discussions on contemporary social issues to wider audiences.
