Event Description
The Armed Forces Flag Day or the Flag Day of India is a day dedicated to India towards collection of funds from people of India for the welfare of the Indian Armed Forces personnel. It has been observed annually in India on December 7 since 1949. Over the years, it has become a tradition to commemorate this day as an honour to the soldiers, sailors and airmen of India.
The Department of students welfare, Sharda University organised a guest lecture by Col.V.N.Thapar (Retd) on the occasion of 'The Armed Forces Flag Day' at the School Of Medical Science & Research Auditorium, Sharda University .
Mr.Ranjit Goswami, Pro Vice Chancellor addressed and congratulated Department of Students welfare for organising such an event which would enlighten the students of the university and the youth to aspire for the defence forces.
This day has been observed annually in India on December 7th and over the years, it has become a tradition to commemorate this day as an honour to the soldiers,airmen and sailors of India.The reason it is called a flag day is because small flags were distributed across the country among the general population which served two purposes- collection of welfare funds called the ARMED FORCES FLAG DAY FUND (AFFDF) and creating as sense of camaraderie and harmony between the Army and citizens.
The event was to bring about awareness amongst the students of the university and make the youth realise the significance of the day.
The resource person Col.V.N.Thapar (Retd) who is the father of barveheart Kargil war martyr Capt Vijayant Thapar, joined NDA in 1958 and was commissioned into the Maratha Light Infantry in Dec'1962. He saw action at Nathula and also participated in Bangladesh operations.He commanded 14 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles served the nation for 37 glorious years and finally retired in 1999.On the pleasant occasion he elaborately explained the critical life and the pursuits the soldiers have to go through for the comfortability of the citizens. He shared his feeling of patriotism for the nation and emphasised on the Indian flag as it is the link between people of the nation from different caste and religion.He also shared his experiences and memories of the 1965 war when Pakistan attempted to invade India and how our brave soldiers fought and Indian airforce showed the courage and destroyed Pakistan Army tanks. He reqouted the slogan by Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri 'Jai Jawan Jai kisan'.
Dr.Nirupma Gupta, Dean of Students Welfare presented the formal vote of thanks.The event was conducted by Sumeet Rana, Assistant Registrar DSW and was managed by the students of Cultural Society Of Sharda University.
