Oral Medicine is that branch of dental science which deals with the study of oral and maxillofacial diseases, oral manifestations of systemic diseases, their diagnosis by modern scientific diagnostic methods and their medical management. Oral Radiology is a branch of dental science which deals with the study of radiation and its application in dental science for Radiographic Techniques, Radio Diagnosis, and Radiation Therapy for Oral and Maxillofacial Diseases.
The Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology is well-equipped with state-of-the-art facilities including Radiovisiography (RVG), Dental X-ray units,CBCT, Digital Panoramic (OPG)imaging machine, and a clinical laboratory incorporated for various investigations.
CONE BEAM COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY
Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is a new medical imaging technique that generates 3-D images at a lower cost and absorbed dose compared with conventional computed tomography (CT). This imaging technique is based on a cone-shaped X-ray beam centered on a 2-D detector that performs one rotation around the patient, producing a series of 2-D images. These images are re-constructed in 3-D using a modification of the original cone-beam algorithm. Images of the craniofacial region are often collected with a higher resolution than those collected with a conventional CT. In addition, the new systems are more practical, as they come in smaller sizes. Department of Oral Medicine & Radiology, School of Dental Sciences is the first Dental Hospital in Greater Noida to launch this facility in the year 2016. This facility is a part of Maxillofacial Dental Radiology which is situated in the Ground Floor, Room No. 2 of SDS Building. There are multiple applications of CBCT which include evaluation of trauma, implant planning, bone density measurements, orthodontic assessment, study of impacted teeth, cysts & tumors, periodontal bone loss assessment, complex root canal anatomies etc. Currently many post-graduate students of different dental departments are pursuing dissertation using this facility under the guidance of Maxillofacial Radiologist.
ORAL CANCER SCREENING & TII CENTER
Oral Cancer Screening & TII Clinic plays an important role in its mission to fight and win the battle against oral cancer. The Clinic is offering wide range of clinical cancer screening services and extensive community education outreach opportunities. We take a holistic approach to your dental care, which includes an oral cancer screening as a part of your regular dental exam. Like any kind of cancer, oral cancer can be life threatening if not diagnosed and treated early.
We have the skills and tools to ensure that early signs and symptoms of oral cancer and pre-cancerous conditions are identified. While these symptoms may be caused by other, less serious problems, it is very important to visit our clinic to rule out the possibility of oral cancer.
Our team is trained in a simple, quick screening which involves an examination of your oral cavity as a whole and not just your teeth to detect cancerous and pre-cancerous conditions. Besides a visual examination of your mouth, we will also feel the tissue of your mouth and throat to detect any abnormalities. If we find an area of concern, we may perform a simple test, such as a toluidine blue staining (vital staining), punch biopsy/ incisional biopsy test, which collects cells from a suspicious lesion in the mouth to be sent to a laboratory for analysis. If this test comes back atypical or positive, we recommend further treatment.
The clinic has specialists which are certified by IDA to give tobacco cessation counseling for those patients who are willing to quit the deleterious habits. The clinic was established in the year 2015 and is part of Oral Medicine & Radiology Department situated in the Ground Floor of SDS building.
OROFACIAL PAIN & TMJ CLINIC
At Orofacial Pain & TMJ Clinic, which was established in the year 2016, our focus is the diagnosis and treatment of TMJ Disorders, Nerve Pain and Headache. We understand that these conditions can be extremely painful and frustrating to live with, and our goal is to increase the quality of life for our patients. By means of a thorough history, evaluation, and review of diagnostic data, we will work with you to provide the best possible solutions to dealing with these highly complex, poorly understood, and often interconnected group of conditions. We are involved in comprehensive clinical examination of your jaws, face, ears, nose, mouth, throat, head and neck which will be followed by the detailed history. Additional diagnostic tests such as blood tests, x-rays, CT scans or MRI may also be ordered. Contributing and aggravating factors will be identified and explained. Written educational aids and illustrations describing your problem will be supplied whenever possible.
After the diagnosis of TMD is established, all reasonable options of therapy and treatment will be explained. Your options may range from receiving information about avoiding specific activities such as chewing nuts, to alternative therapies such as mouth limiting exercises, behavior modification/biofeedback, counseling, stress management, diet counseling, physical therapy, oral appliances, TMJ injections/arthrocentesis, and surgery. We have the in-house facility of TENS & therapeutic ultrasound which are part of physical therapies and can be given on the affected sites.
The clinic is located in the Department of Oral Medicine & Radiology, Ground Floor, SDS Building.
