Dr R S Sharma obtained his Ph. D degree from the University of Rajasthan Jaipur & then undertook postdoctoral work at AIIMS, New Delhi. Dr. Sharma was then nominated for WHO Fellowship by MOHFW, Govt. of India. During the WHO fellowship period he worked at Institute of Reproductive Medicine, Munster, Germany & at Centre for Biomedical Research, Population Council, New York, USA. Dr. Sharma was also awarded Rockefeller Biotechnology Carrier Fellowship & work at Centre for Biomedical Research, Population Council, New York, USA. He was superannuated as Senior Deputy Director General, Head, & Scientist G, Division of Reproductive Biology, Maternal & Child Health, ICMR, New Delhi. Dr. Sharma also served as Chairman, ICMR Covid-19 Procurement Committee & assisted in establishment of more than 3000 Covid-19 diagnostic laboratories in the country during covid-19 pandemic. Dr. R S Sharma represented the country as member of international advisory committees of the World Health Organization (WHO), Geneva, Switzerland on EMF Health, Reproductive Health & infertility
Dr R.S. Sharma is a well-known Reproductive Physiologist who has contributed extensively towards understanding basic aspects of reproductive physiological mechanisms, genomics of infertility both in the human and in non-human primates. His work has established that langur monkey could be a batter animal model for research in Human Reproduction. His basic research work is focused (1) in understanding the physiology of epididymis and the role its environment provides in spermatozoa acquiring fertilizing capabilities, (2) on the pre-clinical evaluation of the safety and efficacy of various potential contraceptive regimens, and (3) in understanding the cause of male infertility and its genomic basis. He has conducted, coordinated, and monitored various clinical trials (i.e. Phase I, II, limited phase III and extended Phase III clinical trials) specially of Praneem Polyherbal Tablet for prevention of transmission of certain STIs, intra-vasal injectable male contraceptive- RISUG, Recombinant beta hCG vaccine for preventing pregnancy and development of specification of Condom for Indian man which have been used in manufacturing condoms in the Country. Dr. R.S. Sharma has also contributed in operational research studies where feasibility of improving the quality and coverage of MCH and FP services through training and supervision has been established and recommendations were made for strengthening the implementation of RCH initiatives with the available health infrastructure.
Dr. Sharmas interest in infertility and its management has led to the development of National Guidelines in regulating ART Clinics in the country that has resulted improvement and quality of IVF services in the country. This document entitled “National Guidelines for Accreditation, Supervision & Regulation of ART Clinics in India”, was approved and accepted by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India. To implement these Guidelines in the country, Dr Sharma developed Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Bill and Surrogacy (regulation) Bill. Both Bills have been passed by both the houses of the Parliament and after the approval of the Honorable President of the Country the bills have been enacted as Acts. This is a major achievement of Dr Sharma.
Dr. R.S. Sharma is the ICMR Coordinator to establish the National Animal Resource Facility at Genome Valley, Hyderabad. He has also carried out Community Services by organizing faculty-supervised health camps where the weaker sections of the Society were provided free medical check-up and medicines. He has numerous publications including National Guidelines to his credit.
