Meaning of the word “Halloween”

The meaning of Halloween is derived from historical reference and simply means the evening just before All Saint’s Day or All Hallows day. Saint’s day falls on November 1 and consequently, the Halloween eve is celebrated on October 31. Halloween is known among all of us just as an electrifying night with loads of trick-or-treating, pumpkins, candy, death, and ghost, but it has an ancient relevance with Celtic harvest celebrations.

Origin of Halloween

1900 years ago, Halloween was originated from Northern France, England, and Ireland mainly. Referred as a Celtic celebration of New Year, Halloween was also addressed as Samhain and celebrated on 1st Nov during that era. It was declared as the biggest holiday of the year by Celtic druids and supposed to be the time when souls of deceased ones could fuse with the living people. Arranging bonfires used to be a mandate custom to celebrate the Halloween.

Samahain started losing its popularity when St. Patrick and other Christian missionaries marked their influential presence. The biggest reason for the fall of Samahain was the people’s inclination towards adopting Christianity. The church then began to promote Halloween with a twinge of Christianity in its quest to mingle paganism and Christianity altogether. It helped the missionaries persuade local people to embrace the state religion.
