Our Partnership with SPIC –MACAY was crystallized on 14th of March, with the performance of Grammy award winner Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. A capacity crowd of students and faculty was enthralled by the melodious notes emanating from his “Mohan Veena”.  For the majority it was their first introduction to the beauty and depth of Indian Classical Music.

He started his performance by playing the Morning raga of devotion and peace” Nat Bhairav”, transporting many from the real world into a virtual world.

Next piece was “Radha Shyam” melody wherein Radha was waiting for her Shyam; The piece could make one feel the pain of Radha. It was followed by a mesmerizing Jugalbundi (of Tabla and Veena) on Lord Shiva’s “Tandav”.  What followed was unbelievable as Mohan Veena became the Larynx for variety of birds. At one point it was the Koel cuckooing, at other point it was the peacock singing and dancing. The beautiful voice of one bird was followed by another.

Magic didn’t end there it was followed by audience singing along with the Jugalbundi, so everybody became a classical musician for the time being. The last melody played was National Anthem and at the request of Pt. Bhatt audience stood up and joined in the singing.

Crowd response was enthusiastic and disciplined. Hardly a discordant note was heard during the entire show.

The afternoon was winded up with a question and answer session, wherein some Sharda students asked in penetrating and intelligent questions, Such as what was his message for the youth? And the answer was “Be proud of Indian Culture, we are far ahead of others”

We at Sharda are immensely proud of both our culture and its ambassadors like Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt.
