B.Sc. Food Science & Technology

Food Science is a multidisciplinary  branch  of  science developed with vision to prepare graduates with expertise in  various areas related to Food science and Technology. Initiated in the year 2015 the course was designed to  impart in-depth knowledge  of scientific and technical approach to understand the nature of raw food materials and their transformation into products so as to meet the demand of  industry.  It is a three year (6 Terms) program whose curriculum  includes courses  such as chemistry, biology, nutrition, biochemistry, microbiology and chemical engineering so as to  study about different aspects of  food and the changes which they undergo  during its  processing and at the time of its storage. Subjects usually studied under this degree are Food Nutrition , Food Chemistry, Food microbiology, Sanitation & Hygiene, Preparation & Packaging Materials, Food Analysis Adulteration & Testing, Food Toxicology etc. On the other hand, basic fundamental subjects like biochemistry, biology, chemistry, physics and maths  have also been given due significance. Main objective of this course is to enable the students to have understanding about  composition of food ,their  nutritional, physicochemical , microbiological properties , different techniques related to food preservation and processing and to study  the importance of, food quality, plant sanitation,  food laws and regulations, food engineering and packaging in food industry.The department has a strong interdisciplinary research and teaching base in sciences and engineering which prepares the student for industry as well as research programs.

Food Science is a far-reaching branch of science that applies the pure science subjects for the study of the nature, properties and composition of foods and  changes which food undergo during storage and processing. It is estimated that with the development of food parks and food processing sector in different parts of India, food technologists of top skill will be required in the coming time.

With its wider scope in various areas  concerning food selection, food processing, food analysis, food safety hygiene & sanitation, food adulteration, inspection and regulations, neutraceuticals, food industry, instrumentation. Our graduates will get employment in the food industry and related areas and can make an important contribution to India and global food security through improved food preservation and the provision of safe and nutritious foods.
