About The Department

Design is essential to our everyday life. Design is involved in the creation of products, services and ideas. Designers value user experience, aesthetics, technology and production. At Sharda University, students learn to design from the perspective of the artist, craftsman, designer, marketer, client, user, customer and engineer. The Department of Design fosters innovation, creativity, facilitates professional relationships, and encourages active engagement with the world around us.

Today the Indian design Industry stands at more than $ 10 billion. We produce designers who excel in this industry. The course is especially designed to bring out the diversity, talent and creativity of youngsters of this nation through a rigorous and reflexive process of training.

At the Bachelors level, the Foundation Year curriculum in the Department of Design is common across the school, giving the students a holistic understanding of their larger disciplines. The emphases in the courses are on collaborative and investigative learning, where the programmes are designed to be extremely flexible and elective, allowing linkages across years as well as subjects. The Department of Design has six areas of concentration, Fashion Design, Habitat Design, Digital & Interactive Design, Design & Management, Industrial & Product Design, and Communication Design, with each student choosing a Major (from the six areas of concentration), and a Minor (from the remaining five). Students are thus allowed to choose their own unique pathways through the course, thereby (re)creating and (re)producing themselves as professionals with multiple expertise.

The Department also helps students gain hands-on experience through internships that are part of the course curriculum, and organizes an annual lecture series which brings experts to campus to speak on the concerns of the industry and provide critical foundations to students’ studio work. The curricula for the course have been designed by our exceedingly competent faculty in consultation with a Board of Studies comprising of eminent members from various design backgrounds.
